Friends: I'll Be There For You.
Part 1: So no one told you life was gonna be this way.
By Sapphire

Okay, yet another fanfic by me. This is written in story format because I wanted to see how well I could do. Email me with feedback at

BTW I have nothing against Chandler, Monica or Phoebe. They're 3 of my favourite characters. (My other favourite is Joey. I think Ross and Rachel
are boring, so nothing interesting or dramatic happens to them.) This is set at the start of series seven and is not linked to any of my other fanfics.
It is so cliché. There are loads of others with the same ending, but few with the unexpected twist that happens in mine. This is quite short, but
there are gonna be follow-ups to it.

5th November, 2000.
Phoebe Buffay sang happily as she drove along in her  grandmother's cab. She  felt wonderful, on the way to meet her five best friends, Chandler Bing,
Monica Geller, Joey Tribbiani, Ross Geller and Rachel Green. Not that Monica would be a Geller for much longer. Chandler had proposed to her not long
ago. All of her friends had seen her through the past six years of her life, the good times and the bad. When her grandma died, when she found her
half-brother Frank Jr, her birth mom Phoebe Sr., and her dad Frank Sr., being a surrogate mother for Frank Jr and Alice, and losing jobs and
boyfriends. It was hard, but they had always been there for her. Like the song on the radio had just said, 'I'll be there for you, cos you're there
for me too'.
She pulled up outside Central Perk, their favourite hangout. She knew immediately where her friends would be; all on the big sofa in the centre,
where they always were, close to the stage where she played her music. Phoebe took her guitar and walked inside.
'Hey guys.' A series of hellos greeted her. Gunther, who worked at the coffeehouse, told her she was on. Phoebe took her guitar out of the case and
sat on a stool in front of the microphone. She started to give an introduction.
'Hi everybody! Tonight, I'm gonna play just one song. It's new, and I would like to dedicate it to my friends who are in it. We've all been friends for
over six years now, ever since Rachel came to the city, so here it goes.'
(Please tell me you can guess the tune-S)
'So no one said that my life would turn out this way,' and Phoebe clapped four times.
'My five best friends are here,
Some say Chandler looks gay.
Mon's a neat freak, Rachel likes to buy
Stuff. Joey's really sweet but dumb and Ross is a dinosaur guy.
We'll be friends forever,
And that makes me really glad.
We'll all stick together,
Through the good times and the bad.
I'm there for the others,
Cos they're there for me too.
Chandler and Monica are now engaged,
R and R divorced,
And that made Ross enraged.
Now they're backups and Joey's mine,
But things like that don't matter cos we'll be friends for all time...
We'll be friends forever,
And that makes me really glad.
We'll all stick together,
Through the good times and the bad.
I'm there for the others,
Cos they're there for me too.'
There was a storm of applause afterwards, much more than usual. Phoebe sat down in a chair and ordered a herbal tea from the waitress.
'That is such a cool song Pheebs!' said shopaholic Rachel, Phoebe's roommate. 'Incredibly accurate.'
'Yeah, but where is the tune from?' asked Monica. 'I know I've heard it before, but I don't know where.'
'Oh, um, it's 'I'll be there for you' by the Rembrants,' Phoebe admitted, 'Not totally my work, but the song reminded me of you guys, so I decided to
use it.'
'Yeah, I love that song,' confessed Joey slightly slower one of the six.
'So what do you all want to do tonight, children?' asked Chandler, the group funnyman. 'Me and Mon want us all to go out for dinner to celebrate the fact
that, after my third proposal, we're now engaged.'
'Uh-huh!' agreed Rachel, and Ross added 'Why not?'
'Where we gonna go?' Monica asked, the most practical member of the group.
'How about Allessandros?' someone suggested. This was where Monica worked.
'In about an hour?' 'Yeah.' 'Sure.' 'Okay.' 'Lets go and get ready.'
45 minutes later, Phoebe opened the door to apartment no. 20 above Central Perk. She didn't bother to knock. None of them knocked. 'Hey guys!' she
called out into the bright, cheerful apartment. This was where she had lived until Monica got too control-y and neurotic. Rachel had moved in soon
afterwards, but then she left as Chandler had moved in a year ago. Monica came out of the bathroom in a short red dress, contrasting visibly with
Phoebe's velvet skirt and top, followed by Chandler in a dark suit.
'Hey Pheebs. Oh my god!' said Monica, 'do you remember the last time you wore that skirt? It was when you were trying to seduce Chandler cos you
found out about us when you were in Ross's apartment!'
'And you wore that dress on your 10-month anniversary, when we couldn't find your earrings cos Rachel had lost one of them!' They laughed about this,
reminiscing as they walked down the stairs to the cab.
Ross and Rachel had decided to walk to Allessandros, and Joey was out on an early date. He generally had at least three dates a week, but now his
series, 'Mac and CHEESE' was on the air, he had more than usual. As Phoebe drove down the street, U2's  'With or without you' came on the air. 'Do you
think they'll ever get back together?' Monica asked. She didn't have to say who. Ross and Rachel had been on again and off again for years, and this was
their song anyway. 'I don't know,' Chandler admitted. 'They're two of my best friends, but sometimes I feel like I don't know them at all.' 'I hope
they do. They have so much history, and I'm sure they'll be happy together, even if Ross marries someone else and gets another divorce,' Phoebe said
quietly. 'They're lobsters. They're meant to be together. Like you two.'
Ross Geller walked along the street, his face shadowed in the early evening gloom, thinking of his second ex-wife, Emily Waltham from London. Part of an
English rhyme she had told him sung itself, ghostlike in the back of his mind; 'Remember, remember, the 5th of November...'
The cab turned the corner, and waved to the two standing in the gloom under the streetlights outside Allessandros. Rachel was late, as usual. Two men
waiting, relaxed and ready to enjoy their evening out with friends, forgetting about their problems, unaware of the ones just arriving.
A car sped out of a side road. Phoebe quickly pushed her foot down on to the brake. It was useless, broken and unable to save them. The tyres of the
speeding car screeched and screamed on the tarmac, and it ploughed into the passenger side of the yellow taxi, sending it spinning over and over on to
the sidewalk, inches from Joey and Ross, now frozen with shock at the devastating scene that lay before them. Both guys had been cut by flying
glass. The racy red car that had been speeding drove away almost silently in the chaos it had created. Chandler, Monica and Phoebe were trapped. Bodies
appeared twisted in the cruelly sharp wreckage. The three friends looked mangled and mutilated, and there was little chance of the being alive. There
was too much blood. Ross watched as it seeped over the paving stones. The engine of the inverted car was clearly on fire- smoke poured out from
underneath the bonnet and into the murky, cloudy New York sky.
