HEART UNDER LOCK AND KEY

BY CREASSYA

This takes place in season four. Monica has gone out with Richard, Julio, and Pete in the past year. While dating them she realized
that there was something missing. Not only does she believe that she's going to die alone, she's decided to give up on love.

When Monica got home from work, she noticed that Rachel wasn't home yet. She was glad. She didn't feel like being bothered. She needed the place
all to herself for a change. She went over and sat on the couch. She laid her head back and closed her eyes. She hadn't planned on falling asleep, but
she did. She didn't realized how tired she was until she sat down. When she woke up two hours later, she was in her room, in bed with the covers
pulled over her. She sat up with a frown on her face. She didn't remember walking into her room and getting in the bed. She took the covers off her
and got out of bed. She walked out of her room and noticed Chandler sitting on the couch watching TV.

"Hey sleepy head. Sleep good?"

"Yeah, I did, but I don't remember walking in there to go to sleep."

"I carried you to your room. I didn't think you wanted to wake up with a broken neck." Chandler said grinning.

"Right." She said smiling.

She walked over to the couch and sat next to him.

"So, why aren't you at your place watching TV?"

"Are you trying to get rid of me?"

"No, just curious."

"Joey has company. I couldn't hear the TV."

"I see."

"Well, since you're woke, here's the remote."

"You can watch whatever you want."

"Thanks Mon."

Five minutes later, Rachel entered the apartment.

"Hey guys. Mon, guess what?"

"Not another, I have somebody who wants to go out you."

"How did you know?" Rachel asked approaching the couch.

"Because, you've been doing this for the last couple weeks now."

"Fine, but this guy really wants to go out with you. He's really cute and he has money."

"Like I told you before, I'm not interested."

"Why not?"

"I'm done with the whole dating thing. I don't have time for it anymore."

"Mon, you go to work and come home. You don't have anything else to do."

"Did you not hear me?"

"Chandler, you think she should start dating again right?"

"Oh no, don't get me involved in this. This is between you two."

"Come on Mon." Rachel begged.

"No Rachel!"

"Okay, I won't ask you anymore."

"Thank you." Monica said.

She got up and went into the kitchen to fix herself something to eat. Rachel shook her head and went into her room. Chandler watched Monica as
she fixed herself a sandwich. He then got up off the couch and went into the kitchen to join her.

"Did I hear you right? You're done with the whole dating thing?"

"You heard right."

"Can I ask why?" He said sitting down.

"It's just not meant for me to be with anybody."

"What?"

"Chandler, of all people, I would expect you to understand this."

"For me maybe, but not you."

"What?"

"Monica, I'm a hopeless case, but you....you're not gonna have trouble finding anybody."

"You're not hopeless."

"Do you not know me at all?" Chandler asked.

"Chandler...."

"Anyway, this is about you. What's going on?"

"I just can't seem to find the right guy."

"Mon, that kinda thing takes a while."

"I know, but I'm fed up with the whole concept of love. I'm tired of being hurt and let down all the time. It's too much."

"I've never known you to talk like this before."

"I know."

"I'm sure you'll feel differently about all this tomorrow."

"Don't count on it."

A couple days later, Chandler entered the coffeehouse. He saw Monica talking to some guy at the counter. He sat down on the couch, and seconds
later she left the guy at the counter and sat on the couch next to Chandler.

"Hey Mon."

"Hi."

"What's the matter?"

"I'll be fine. I'm just having one of those days."

"I'm listening." Chandler said softly.

"I don't wanna put this on you." She said looking into his caring eyes.

"I don't mind." He said reaching for her hand.

"Did you ever feel like the biggest loser on the planet?" Monica asked.

"Hey, you're talking to Mr. Loser himself." He said grinning.

Monica smiled at him and started telling him about how disappointing all of her relationships were. He listened intently. She seemed upset and a little
depressed. His heart went out to her. He felt that none of the other guys deserved her. He felt that he did, but he didn't say anything. While she was
talking he didn't say a word. He felt that she needed his full attention, and someone to really listen to her. She kept her head down the entire time
she talked to him. He found that strange because she always looked him in the eye. She started fidgeting, so he squeezed her hand. He wanted to
look into her eyes, so he put the tip of his finger under her chin, and lifted her head up. When their eyes met, he felt weak. Her eyes were sparkling,
and yet sad. At that moment he felt like kissing her. There were no words between them for a few seconds. Chandler broke the silence and took his
finger away from her face.

"I can't help it. I was brought up that way."

"Well, that doesn't mean you have to stay that way."

"I don't get you." Monica said.

"What are you talking about?"

"When I'm down, you talk to me, and you're positive, but when it comes to yourself, you're the most negative person I know. Why is that?"

"I don't know. I have faith in other people, but I don't have faith in myself. Weird huh?"

"Not really."

I'm just concerned about you." He said grinning.

"I know you are. I'll just have to get used to being alone."

"Well, we'll just have to be along together."

Monica laughed at his comment. She realized that she was beginning to sound more and more like him. She touched his face and thanked him for
cheering her up. When she took her hand away from his face and turned away, he closed his eyes.

When Monica was lying in bed that night, she found herself smiling. Chandler was the sweetest guy she had ever had the pleasure of knowing. She
was beginning to realize that she had feelings for him. The smile faded away and she sat up.

"I'm not supposed to be feeling this way." She said aloud.

She didn't want to have these feelings. She didn't want to feel anything for anybody. She was done with love and relationships. She just wanted to
concentrate on herself. She felt as though she didn't have anything left to give to anyone. She laid back down and tried to close her eyes, but she
kept seeing Chandler's face. When he put his finger underneath her chin so that they were looking into each other's eyes, she melted. She fought off
a smile and turned away from him. She didn't want him to see her blush.

A week later, Chandler walked in while Monica was sitting on the couch reading.

"Hey Mon. I haven't seen you all week. Which is weird considering we live across the hall from each other." He said sitting down next to her.

"I know. I've been really busy lately." She said avoiding his eyes.

"Mon, is something wrong?"

"No, why?"

"I don't know. I just get the feeling that you don't want to be bothered with me. Did I do something?"

"No of course not. I'm just going through some things right now. It's not that I don't wanna be bothered with you."

"Good. I was getting a little worried."

"You don't have to worry about that." She said looking at him.

"So, has Rachel been trying to set you up still?"

"No, she finally backed off. Plus some of the guys she was thinking about setting me up with, she wanted to date." Monica said smiling.

"That's good. I think."

"So, what have you been up to?" Monica asked.

"Working."

"And?"

"And, that's it."

"Sounds exciting."

"That's me, Mr. Exciting.

"Well, I think you're exciting." Monica said smiling.

"You do not." He said.

"Yes I do!"

"Yeah right. How is that possible?"

"Because you're funny."

"Good one." Chandler said sarcastically.

"I'm serious. Not only are you funny, but you're very sweet. To me that's exciting."

"Really?" Chandler asked with a slight frown.

"Yeah."

Chandler sat in his room for hours thinking about Monica. He felt the same way as Monica about love and relationships, but didn't say anything.
Thinking about him and Monica together, made him feel good. He'd always had a soft spot for her, but that soft spot was turning into strong feelings.
He wanted to be near her all the time, which scared him. He was wondering what would happened if he were to go across the hall and tell her how he
felt about her. He got up off the bed and began to pace back and forth across the floor. He found it strange that he urgently wanted to express his
feelings for her.

He knew that it was late, and Monica was probably asleep, but he went over to her and Rachel's apartment and knocked on the door softly. Monica
had just turned out the lights and was about to go into her room until she heard a knock on the door. When she opened the door, Chandler was
standing there looking nervous.

"Chandler, are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine." He said with a slight grin.

"Did you wanna come in?"

"No."

"Okay.....

Before she could say another word, Chandler stepped closer to her and kissed her. She closed her eyes and kissed him back. She enjoyed the feel of
his lips pressed against hers and the touch of his hands on her face. They kissed for a minute before Monica stopped him. She looked into his eyes,
and then she slammed the door in his face. He stood there in shock. He was hurt and embarrassed. He went back to his and Joey's apartment with
his head down. He had a feeling that things wouldn't go as he planned, but once she staring kissing him, he thought that there was some hope.

Days later, Monica sat in her bedroom thinking about the kiss she and Chandler shared. She felt really bad about slamming the door in his face. She
wanted to kiss him, but didn't think that he would catch her off guard the way he did. Part of her was a little angry with him. She mentioned to him
that she was through with love and relationships, and everything in that area. How could he do that? She wondered. She liked the kiss, but it also
scared her. She had no idea that Chandler had feelings for her. She hadn't seen him in days. She figured that he was avoiding her because she hurt
his feelings by slamming the door in his face. She needed to talk to him, but she couldn't face him. She decided that she would call him instead.

The phone rang three times before Joey answered it.

"Hello."

"Hey Joey, is Chandler there?"

"Yeah, hold on."

Joey knocked on Chandler's door and told him to get the phone. He slowly walked out of his room and picked up the phone.

"Hello."

"Hi Chandler."

"Monica."

"Hi. Listen, I'm really sorry for closing the door in your face. I shouldn't have done that. I feel really bad about acting like that."

"It's all right."

"No, it's not. I got scared and confused and angry."

"I probably shouldn't have kissed you. It's my fault. Don't worry about it." He aid going into his room for some privacy.

"Did I hurt your feelings?"

"Yeah, I little."

"I'm sorry Chandler. I didn't mean to."

"I know you didn't."

"Are you sure. I don't wanna hurt you. Too late right?"

"I guess, but it's okay."

"I feel so bad."

"You can make it up to me."

"Sure anything."

"You can come over here and kiss me." Chandler said with a smile.

"Chandler."

"You wanna make it up to me right?"

"Yeah."

"Well, that's what you have to do."

"Don't temp me." She said grinning.

"Why not? You didn't like the kiss?"

"Of course I did."

"Well, you sure have a funny way of showing it."

"Chandler, I told you that I was done with all that."

"So, you're gonna become a nun now?"

"No."

"That's what it sounds like."

"Aren't you scared?" She asked.

"I'm terrified. I just can't help myself. I want you." He said getting serious.

"Chandler."

"I do."

Monica closed her eyes and put her hand over her face. He sounded so sweet and sincere.

"I have to go Chandler. I'll talk you later." She said softly.

"Okay."

Two weeks later, while Chandler was getting ready for bed, Monica slowly walked in and closed the door. Chandler looked surprised to see her.

"Hey Mon. What are you doing here?"

"I'm not really sure." She said standing up against the door.

"Are you coming in?" He asked standing up.

"I don't know."

"I'm not gonna bite you Mon....unless you want me to."

Monica laughed while Chandler walked over to the radio.

"Mon, how do you feel about me? I don't tell me you don't know." He said smiling.

"I have feelings for you, and it scares me because I'm not supposed to be feeling like this."

"Why not?"

"Because......I've given up on this stuff."

"Well, can you make an exception for me?" He said softly.

"I don't know about that."

"Well, this is what I know." He said turning on the radio.

The song Baby I'm Yours by Shai, began to play. Chandler walked over to his bedroom door and took Monica by the hand.

"Dance with me, and listen to the words in this song." He said touching her face.

He pulled her closed and held her tightly as they slow danced.

Baby I'm Yours

Understand girl that my heart
Is in your hands
And I'm cautious
Of falling in love again
So please don't hurt me
I'm scared
Don't dessert me
I'm afraid of being the fool
Again

So baby I'm Yours
If you want me
And if you want my sweet love
Baby I'm yours
If you need me
I'll love you forever
If you want me
Give me your love
Baby I'm yours
If you need me

Realize girl that my faith
Is kind of torn
So watch ya step girl
Because my heart is weak
And worn
So won't you please
Be careful I'm fragile
I can't imagine the damage
I'll have to handle
If you hurt me one more time
Please be mine

Baby I'm yours
If you want me
And if you want me sweet love
Baby I'm yours
If you need me
I'll love you forever
If you want me
Give me your love
Baby I'm yours
If you need me

Baby I've been through
A whole lot of relationships
A whole lot of broken promises
But now I'm ready for a real one sweetheart

You don't have to worry baby
Don't you ever go nowhere
Baby I'm, baby baby I'm yours
Baby I'm, baby baby I'm yours
Baby I'm, baby baby I'm yours
And I'll give it all to you
Baby I'm yours if you want me
If you need me
I'll be right here for you
Just call on me baby

Cause baby I'm yours
If you want me
I'm the only man you'll ever need
Don't be afraid baby
I'll love you forever
If you want me
Baby I'm yours
If you need me
I'm right here baby

I'll be right here
I'll be the one you need baby
I'll be right here
For you girl

End chorus

Chandler and Monica looked into each other's eyes. They were silent as the song was coming to an end. He gave her a soft peck on the lips and she
touched his face. He didn't want to put any pressure on her, so he remained quiet. He knew how Monica felt about him now, and that put him at ease.
They both knew that she still wasn't ready, and that she needed more time. She laid her head against his chest. She enjoyed being his arms. Her
feelings for Chandler overwhelmed her. It wasn't supposed to be like this, but it sure feels good, she thought to herself. She knew that when the time
came, and she was ready, Chandler would definitely be the one she would be with for life.
